Barefoot Sailing Adventures
Paihia, Bay of Islands · departure directly from Paihia beachfront
Barefoot Sailing Adventures is a small, locally owned sailing operation run by Luke and Rachael from Paihia, offering day cruises and private charters in the Bay of Islands. Their signature Island Hopper Day Cruise sails to a wildlife sanctuary island for a full day of snorkelling, paddleboarding, bush walks and wildlife spotting — seabirds, stingrays, dolphins and the occasional orca are regular companions. The Sundowner Evening Cruise covers the inner bay over two hours as the day winds down. Small group sizes of 16–20 keep the experience personal, with a sustainably minded crew who donate a portion of each Island Hopper ticket to Project Island Song — a conservation effort to restore native wildlife to the islands. Private charters for groups up to 20 are available year-round. Modern catamarans sit flat while sailing for a comfortable, stable ride.
Inclusive statement
Luke, Rachael and the Barefoot crew genuinely look after every single guest from the moment they step aboard — their reviews speak for themselves. The stable, flat-sailing catamaran and relaxed pace make this one of the most naturally inclusive on-water experiences in Northland, and the crew will work with anyone who has specific needs to make sure they're comfortable and well looked after.
Good to know
Boarding involves a short transfer from Paihia beach directly onto the catamaran — guests are ferried out so they don't get wet, but stepping aboard requires a small step from the tender to the boat. Guests with significant mobility needs should contact the operator in advance to discuss boarding. The Island Hopper includes optional swimming, snorkelling and bush walking on the island — all activities are optional and guests are free to relax on the deck throughout. All trips are subject to weather and minimum passenger numbers. Private charters have a 50% deposit to secure the date. We are not quite Adapting Aotearoa Endorsed as have yet to develop an Access Guide, although currently going through the Endorsement Process — please contact us directly.
