The Helicopter Line – Franz Josef
Franz Josef Township, Glacier Country

The Helicopter Line operates scenic helicopter flights out of Franz Josef Village, taking guests over some of the most dramatic glacial landscapes in the Southern Alps. Every flight includes a snow landing — touching down on ancient ice high above the rainforest, surrounded by sweeping views of the Southern Alps and the Tasman Sea coast. Choose from a 25-minute Franz Josef Glacier flight, a 40-minute Twin Glacier option covering both Franz Josef and Fox, or a 50-minute Mountain Spectacular that extends the route toward Aoraki/Mount Cook. Flights depart on-demand from the base on State Highway 6, subject to weather conditions.
Inclusive statement
The Helicopter Line crew are experienced at welcoming guests of all abilities and will go out of their way to make every flight possible. Adapted glacier experiences including a specially designed ski-chair for snow landings are available for guests with reduced mobility — the team works closely with MakingTrax to tailor every experience to the individual.
Good to know
Transferring into the helicopter can be challenging for some guests — contact MakingTrax well in advance with details of your mobility, weight, and any equipment you'll be bringing so the right arrangements can be made. Weight restrictions do apply. All flights are weather dependent and subject to change on the day. Warm layers and sturdy footwear are recommended for snow landings. Adapted trips are booked and coordinated through MakingTrax. We have yet to develop an Access Guide — please contact Makingtrax to adapt your experience.
