Tongariro River Rafting

Turangi, Taupo

Adapting Aotearoa Endorsed
MakingTrax Endorsed

Tongariro River Rafting is a 100% Kiwi-owned family business run by Garth and Leigh Oakden from their Turangi base since 1987, with over 230,000 guests on the water. Their signature Grade 3 half-day rafting trip navigates more than 60 rapids through 13km of pristine Tongariro River wilderness — more continuous rapids than any other commercially rafted stretch in New Zealand. The scenery is only accessible by raft, with towering pine forests, native bush, volcanic cliffs and crystal-clear spring-fed water surrounding you throughout. Keep an eye out for the endangered Whio Blue Duck, which nests along the river banks. Family Float trips on the gentler Grade 2 lower river are available from age 5, and multi-day fishing and Blue Duck Experience packages are also offered. All gear is provided — just bring swimwear and a towel. Free pickups from Turangi are available.

Inclusive statement

Tongariro River Rafting works with MakingTrax to make whitewater accessible to guests of all abilities. Rafting is one of the most naturally inclusive adventure activities — everyone is seated and the crew assist with transfers throughout. With the MakingTrax whitewater harness available, the team can support guests with limited mobility or those who rely on a wheelchair for mobility.

Good to know

The MakingTrax whitewater harness provides full trunk support for guests with limited core function, including those without trunk control. Book through MakingTrax with plenty of notice — include your ability, weight and contact number. Minimum age is 10 years for the Grade 3 trip (10–12 year olds must be accompanied by a parent or guardian 1:1); minimum age is 5 years for the Family Float. The rafting centre is based in Turangi, with a shuttle vehicle provided to the river. Please contact us directly, or MakingTrax for adaptive trips.
